Canadian Election Insights

Canada’s 2019 Federal Election took place on October 21st, and after a heated 40 day campaign, Justin Trudeau’s liberal party remains in power, albeit with a smaller minority of Parliamentary seats.

On election day, our statisticians found that Pornhub traffic remained close to average through most of the day, with a slight dip around 6pm by -4%, when adjusted for time zones.

Pornhub traffic across all of Canada dropped as much as 10% from 9pm to 10pm as many people across the country were tuned in to watch the live election results. After midnight when most media outlets had announced their predictions, traffic jumped 8% above average by 1am.

When we compare traffic by gender, it was men who were more likely to tune into the election results instead of Pornhub, with a -11% drop in male traffic at 10pm, compared to only a -7% drop in female traffic. The opposite was true at 1am when female traffic was 14% higher than average, compared to an 11% increase by men.

Election day had by far the greatest impact on Pornhub visitors over the age of 55. In the morning, over-55 traffic was down by -11%, and at 10pm in the evening, their traffic was down by -18%, compared to a -9% drop by those aged 18-34 and only -6% for 35-45 year olds.

The following chart illustrates the average traffic change in each Province and Territory, during three different time periods on election day. Morning from 8am to Noon, afternoon from Noon to 6pm, and evening from 8pm to Midnight.

We can easily see that election day had by far the biggest impact on traffic from New Brunswick, which was down -10% in the morning, -12% in the afternoon and -8% in the evening. Nova Scotia had the highest drop in evening traffic by -9%.

The Northwest Territories, Nunavut and Yukon all had higher than average traffic in the afternoon. Only Newfoundland and Manitoba had higher than average traffic levels in the morning.
