This special Insights analysis comes from Paul J. Maginn, Associate Professor of Urban Planning at the University of Western Australia.

Pornhub, one of the world’s largest online porn sites, provides us with a department store-sized window into our online viewing habits of “mainstream porn”.

In 2017 Pornhub had 28.5 billion visits, up from 23 billion (24%) in 2016. According to internet analytics firm, Alexa, Pornhub is the 27th most popular website in the world. It ranked 18th within Australia (and 14th in the US, 15th in Canada, and 16th in the UK.)

Australians made the eighth highest number of visits to the website – the same position it held in 2016. Given the comparatively small population of Australia, its inclusion in the “top 10” suggests that Australians are, at the very least, curious about porn.

Here’s a snapshot of the geographies of online pornography down under.

Whereas two-thirds (67.3%) of Australia’s population in 2017 lived within the various state and territory capital city regions, these same areas accounted for about 90% of the unique pageviews to the multitude of porn category pages on Pornhub’s website. Melbourne and Sydney, which account for 40.6% of the population, made more than half of all visits to the site.

The significant over-representation of porn consumption from metropolitan Australia may also be explained, in large part, by better telecommunications infrastructure and faster internet download speeds compared to regional and rural Australia.

Australia’s top 10

Eight categories of porn were found in the top 10 most viewed categories across all Australia’s capital cities. There were: anal, big tits, hentai (a Japanese-influenced form of porn), lesbian, mature (“older women”, often 40-60+ years old), MILF (“glamourous older women”, often 30-50 years old), teen (18+), and threesome.

Lesbian was the most popular category of porn among Australians, ranking first across all state capitals. MILF ranked second for all metropolitan regions except Canberra, where hentai came in second place, pushing MILF into third spot. Teen(18+) porn proved to be more popular in Adelaide (equal second) and Brisbane (equal third) whereas threesome porn ranked third in Melbourne and Sydney. Anal took out third place in Perth.

Japanese-categorised porn made the top 10 in just three cities – Canberra (equal sixth); Melbourne (ninth) and Sydney (seventh). This was also true for Asian porn.

Transgender porn, made it into the top 10 in only two cities – Adelaide (ninth) and Brisbane (tenth) (and 11th in Perth).

Given the increased prominence of transgender porn at the 2018 AVN Adult Entertainment Expo, high-profile Australian performer Angela White recently shooting her first transgender scene with Chanel Santini, plus wider media and public debates on trans issues, more people, including heterosexual male porn viewers, will likely be watching transgender porn in the next year or two.

What about gay porn?

Pornhub also has a separate site for gay porn. While this type of porn may be popular with gay men, it is also watched by women.

Pornhub offers about 40 different categories of gay porn on its website. In 2017, the top 10 categories across all Australian cities were: straight guys (in which gay men have sex with “straight” men); bareback (sex without using condoms); daddy (the gay equivalent of “MILF” porn); twink (the equivalent of the category “Teen 18+”); big dick; rough sex; group; public; creampie; and Asian.

Canberra is the only city to feature muscle, hunk, and fetish porn in their gay porn top 10. Similarly, black porn only makes the top 10 in Adelaide (seventh) and Brisbane (tenth). Brisbane and Perth are the only cities to feature public porn (ninth).

From computers to phones

It should come as no real surprise that desktop computers are no longer the primary means of accessing porn on the net. Smart phones account for the majority of unique traffic to Pornhub from Australia. Brisbane leads the way with 62.4% of porn traffic coming from phones.

Nevertheless, people are still watching on computers, particularly in Canberra – the epicentre of federal politics and bureaucracy – where 38.4% of Pornhub traffic came from desktops. Tablets account for a small share of traffic, highest in Hobart and Darwin (both at 14.6%).

With the 5G mobile phone system just over the horizon, and increasingly cost-effective and larger data packages offered by mobile phone companies, smart phones will undoubtedly increase their dominance in how we access online pornography into the future.

In overall terms, our mainstream and gay porn category preferences are fairly stable, although there are some notable inter-city variations.

As porn scholar Shira Tarrant notes in her book, The Pornography Industry, “pornography has been around for as long as visual images and the written word have existed”. Given the fact that the past is arguably the best predictor of the future, our curiosity in and consumption of pornography is unlikely to disappear any time soon.

Season 2 of the Netflix adult cartoon series Big Mouth landed on October 5th. Much of the show focuses on the sexual fantasies of it’s main characters (including some references to Pornhub), so it’s no surprise that fans began searching Pornhub for parodies of the cartoon. Cinema Blend asked Pornhub’s statisticians to take a closer look.

By October 8th, searches were 14,937% higher than their daily average before the new season arrived. In just over a week, 1 million people have searched for “big mouth” on Pornhub. On it’s peak day, searches for “big mouth cartoon” nearly equaled those of “cartoon”, one of Pornhub’s usual top 20 searches.

The most common searches containing “big mouth” have been:

• big mouth cartoon
• big mouth
• big mouth show
• big mouth lips
• big mouth cartoon sex
• big mouth blowjob
• big mouth hentai
• big mouth cartoon porn

YouTube experienced a rare global service outage on October 16th, between 9:30 pm and 10:45 pm Eastern time. Mashable checked with us to see if YouTube’s disruption an effect on Pornhub traffic, and it certainly did. When you can’t tube, you fap instead!

Traffic to Pornhub surged during the outage, reaching 21% above daily averages at 10 pm. That’s a significant increase by millions of additional viewers during Pornhub’s peak evening hours.

During the outage, our statisticians also found some search terms had increased in popularity well above their average levels on October 16th. Searches for “asmr” increased by 201%, as people looking for an Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response were just as likely to find that on Pornhub as YouTube. Searches containing “YouTube” increased by 183%, along with other terms likely to appear on both streaming sites including “wwe”, “bowsette“, “fortnite“, “minecraft“, “game”, “pokemon“, “celebrity”, “twitch”, “overwatch” and “halloween“.

In this edition of Pornhub Insights we’re joined by Radio Sarajevo to take a look at the Southeastern European country of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Bosnia ranks 75th for traffic to Pornhub, well ahead of it’s worldwide rank or 135th for population. Bosnians most often visit Pornhub on Thursday, and they are least likely to visit on Saturday.

The most popular search in Bosnia is “srpski pornici”, followed by “bosnian”, “jebange” and “serbian”.

The most viewed category of video in Bosnia is MILF, followed by Mature and Lesbian. These favorites are shared with much of Pornhub’s worldwide audience.

When compared to the rest of the world, Bosnians are proportionately 136% more likely to view the Old/Young category, 123% more into Mature and 93% more into Smoking.

The most searched for pornstar in Bosnia is Lisa Ann, followed by Mia Khalifa and Asa Akira.

30% of visitors from Bosnia are female, which is higher than the worldwide average of 26%. The average age of Bosnian visitors is 34 years old, with the 25 to 34 age group making up 42% of all visitors.

Like most of the world, Bosnians are far more likely to visit Pornhub on their smartphones. 75% of Bosnians use mobile devices to view porn, while only 25% use desktop or laptop computers.

The average visitor from Bosnia spends 10 minutes and 8 seconds on Pornhub. Visitors from Prnjavor come and go 51 seconds faster, while those from Cazin hold out 19 seconds longer than the average Bosnian.

Visitors to Pornhub Gay pages from Bosnia are most likely to view the “Gay – Daddy” category, followed by “Gay – Big Dick” and “Gay – Straight Guys”.

When compared to gay content viewers worldwide, Bosnians are 65% more likely to view “Gay – Amateur”, 60% more into “Gay – Pornstar” and 56% more into “Gay – Feet”.

Fortnite Season 6 has arrived, and just like Season 5, it has Pornhub visitors very excited. Forbes asked Pornhub’s statisticians to dig deeper into the data. Following the launch, searches containing Fortnite more than doubled on Pornhub. And seeing as Fortnite has remained in Pornhub’s Top 25 search terms through most of 2018, that equates to hundreds of thousands of additional searches per day.

So what is it that these Fortnite fans are searching for? The most popular search is “Fortnite hentai”, followed by “Fortnite porn”, “Fortnite parody” and “Fortnite cosplay”. Many of the searches are related to specific characters. Season 5’s “Sun Strider” still tops the character searches, followed by 4’s “Zoey”.

New to Season 6, cowgirl “Calamity” is now the third most popular character search. Calamity arrived with some controversy when players found that her breasts had a very prominent jiggle. Naturally, bouncing boobs have no place in a video game so they were promptly firmed-up by Epic Games in a patch.

Please note: No such fix is planned to prevent jiggling breasts on Pornhub.

In the latest example of something breaking the internet, we have Bowsette, a fantasy hybrid between Nintendo characters Bowser and Princess Peach. Originally based on a fan-drawn comic, within days the internet spawned countless other Bowsette themed fan art. Life imitates art, and eventually porn imitates everything, so it wasn’t long before hentai style porn parodies and tributes featuring Bowsette appeared on Pornhub. VentureBeat asked the Insights team to take a closer look at this phenomenon.

Bowsette searches didn’t exist before September 22nd, but appeared first on September 23rd and then grew exponentially. On September 26th, 323,179 people searched for “Bowsette” on Pornhub. Bowser also received some additional attention. While a few hundred people were already searching for “Bowser” on a daily basis, his searches reached as high as 51,882 on September 26th. The dynamic duo shelled out over 500,000 Pornhub searches in just over 72 hours!

Pornhub’s statisticians report that men were 271% more likely to search “Bowser” and 342% more likely to search “Bowsette” when compared to women. Millennials aged 18 to 34 were 214% more likely to search “Bowsette” when compared to visitors aged 35 and up.

In this edition of Pornhub Insights we’re joined by Start-Up.ro to take a look at the porn viewing habits of Romania’s visitors. Romania ranks 29th for traffic to Pornhub, even though it only ranks 59th worldwide for population. The average visitor from Romania spends 9 minutes 57 seconds on Pornhub, which is -19 seconds less than the world average. Like most of the world, Romanians most often visit Pornhub on Sunday and least-often on Friday. Midnight is the highest traffic time of day, which is about an hour later than most countries.

The most popular searches in Romania are “romania” and “romanian”. They’re followed by searches for “lesbian”, “step mom” and “hentai”.

The most viewed category of video in Romania is “Mature”, followed by “Lesbian” and “MILF”.

When compared to the rest of the world, Romanians are proportionately 62% more likely to view “Double Penetration” videos, 61% more into “Gangbang” and 50% more into “Orgy”.

The most searched pornstar in Romania is Lisa Ann, followed by Mia Khalifa and Piper Perri.

Women represent 21% of visitors from Romania, slightly less than the worldwide average of 25%. The average age of Romania’s visitors is 32 years old, which is 3 years younger than the worldwide average of 35 years. Visitors between the ages of 25 to 34 make up 42% of Romania’s traffic.

70% of visitors from Romania use smartphones to browse Pornhub, while on 4% use tablets and 26% use their desktop or laptop computers.

Romania’s visitors to Pornhub Gay pages are most likely to view the “Daddy” category, followed by “Big Dick” and “Straight Guys”.

When compared to Pornhub Gay viewers elsewhere in the world, Romanians are 57% more likely to view gay “Pornstar” videos, 51% more into gay “Uncut” and 50% more into gay “Muscle”.

Pornhub Insights has looked into some pretty interesting fetishes before. Sneakers, Feederism, Wedgies, Golden Showers, Cuckolding, Clowns and Spectrophelia just to name a few. As one of the hottest summers on record draws to a close, the folks at Metro UK asked our statisticians to take a look at how the Sweat Fetish gets Pornhub’s visitors all hot and bothered.

Just like the world’s top climate scientists, Pornhub’s data scientists also report that things have been heating up the last few years – at least when it comes to sweaty searches. As shown in the following chart, sweat related searches always peak during June of each calendar year from 2014 to 2018. June of 2016 was the most sweaty period ever recorded on Pornhub.

The top sweat related search term is “sweaty”, followed by “sweaty sex” and “sweaty feet”. Eight of the top 25 searches are related to feet or socks.

Men are proportionately +44% more likely to search for sweaty porn than women, while 18 to 24 year olds are +20% more likely to search when compared to all other ages. Visitors over the age of 65 are the least likely to search by -26%.

Over 5000 videos on Pornhub include the tag words “sweat” or “sweaty”, and they’re viewed over 300,000 times each month. The most viewed sweaty video of all time is named “DIRTY YOGA TEACHER ON GORGEOUS FITNESS MODEL” which has more than 20 million views.

Apple’s annual Special Event is streamed live to millions of people worldwide, and this year Pornhub’s statisticians were ready to capture all the excitement through data.

Our Insights for the 2016 and 2017 Apple events relied on hourly traffic from Google Analytics, but this year our statisticians captured actual pageviews as they occurred on our servers so we could break down traffic changes by the minute!

We then compared pageviews during each minute of the event to the exact same time on the three previous Wednesdays to find the percent change from average. Our friends from Cnet helped us out by breaking down the event timeline.

The resulting data reveals that people using Apple devices are far more interested in seeing Apple’s latest tech compared to people using non-Apple devices. During the event, traffic from Apple iOS devices dropped an average of -7% while only -2.1% on non-Apple devices (the majority of which are Android based).

By the minute we can see what parts of the event were more likely to draw in viewers (and take them away from Pornhub). As the event began at 1pm Eastern, Pornhub’s traffic dipped by nearly -10% on Apple devices and -3.7% on non-Apple.  The first part of the show focused on the new Apple Watch, which seems to have had less impact on Pornhub’s traffic. Perhaps those not interested in wearables figured they had 10 minutes to spend on Pornhub while they waited to see the new iPhones.

As the Apple event switched to the big iPhone reveal, Pornhub’s pageviews dropped by -11.3% on Apple devices and -4.4% on Android. Traffic remained below average over the next 40 minutes as the shiny new phones and their fancy new processors were pitched. Talk of the iPhone XS supporting Dual SIMs (a long-time exclusive of Android devices) seems to have peaked the interested of some non-Apple users.

As the discussion turned to Apple’s environmental impact, traffic again returned to Pornhub briefly, then dropped again as soon as the new colorful iPhone XR models were revealed. This caused pageviews from Apple based devices to dip as much as -11.5%.

As the live event wrapped up, traffic steadily returned to Pornhub. While non-Apple users didn’t seem particularly impacted, we found that post-event traffic from Apple devices was well above average following the event.

De Morgen recently asked Pornhub’s statisticians to see how porn consumption in Belgium compares to that of other countries. Belgium ranks 19th for traffic coming to Pornhub, an impressive feat considering it ranks 80th worldwide for population. For pageviews per capita, that puts Belgium into Pornhub’s Top 15 countries. Belgium’s highest traffic day of the week is Monday, while most of the world prefers Sunday. Friday is the lowest traffic day, the same as it is in most countries.

The most popular search term in Belgium is “MILF”, followed by “Lesbian” and “French”. In our 2017 Year in Review we found that Belgium’s top two terms were “francaise” and “french”, indicating that they have fallen a few positions in favor of other go-to genres.

Belgiums favorite categories once again are Lesbian and MILF, followed by Anal, Mature and Big Tits.

When compared to the rest of the world, visitors from Belgium are 166% more likely to view the French category, 69% more into Orgy, 63% for Babe and 47% for Old/Young.

Belgium’s most searched pornstar is Riley Reid, followed by Lana Rhoades and Mia Khalifa.

Belgium has a much higher proportion of female visitors at 31% compared to the world average of 26%. The average age of visitors is 38 years old, compared to the worldwide average of 35, with those aged 25 to 34 making up the largest overall age group at 31% of visitors.

More than half of visitors from Belgium are still using desktop computers, compared to only 24% worldwide. While smartphone usage seems to be rather low in Belgium, they do have a much higher percentage of tablet users at 14% compared to only 9% worldwide.

The average visitor from Belgium spends 10 minutes and 10 seconds each time they visit Pornhub. Some cities take a bit more time, such as those visiting from Schaerbeek, Liege and Anderlecht who all need an extra 20 seconds. Visitors from Brussels come and go a full 47 seconds faster than the Belgian national average.

Over time, our statisticians have found that regardless of location, people are pretty regular about when the times they choose to visit Pornhub. So major holidays and events can often have a dramatic effect on Pornhub traffic.  In Belgium, traffic increases by 7% on New Years Day, but drops by -2% on the Belgian National Holiday in July.

During the World Cup, Belgian traffic dropped as much as -56% during the elimination games, but as shown in our World Cup Final Insights, Belgium’s traffic only dropped by -12% while neighboring France beat Croatia.
