Former Playboy Playmate Karen McDougal was back in the spotlight this week, as new information came out about her alleged relationship with Donald Trump. Naturally searches for Karen shot through the roof on Pornhub just as they did in February when her story first came out. These Insights follow recent search data for both Stormy Daniels and Trump Jr.’s alleged affair with Aubrey O’Day.

On February 18th, searches for Karen McDougal were 1293% above average, and on March 22 they were 1140% above her daily average. (Average based on daily search volume from February 1st to March 22nd).

The most common search has been “karen mcdougal naked pics”, followed by simply “karen mcdougal” as well as “playmate karen mcdougal” and “vintage karen mcdougal”.

Another O’Day, another Trump O’fair. While Stormy Daniels searches are still on fire, today it’s presidential son Donald Jr. who shares the news for his alleged affair with former Celebrity Apprentice contestant Aubrey O’Day. While Aubrey enjoyed a small but consistent number of daily searches on Pornhub, her search popularity shot up 11,105% after the story came out, and continues to rise.

Love interests often cause massive search increases on Pornhub. Searches for actress Meghan Markle shot up 2208% after her relationship with Prince Harry was first revealed.

Polygon contacted the Insights team to see if the media attention around the game Fortnite has had any effect on Pornhub searches. Our statisticians found that while Fortnite had a slow start on Pornhub, it has steadily gained ground over the last several months to become of of our top video game related search terms.

After Fortnite launched in July of 2017, it only resulted in a handful of searches. Things really picked up at the end of September 2017 when Fortnite’s Battle Royale came out, and they have grown steadily since then. Spikes in search volume seem to coincide with major game updates and news cycles such as the 1.36 patch in January and when 60 FPS was enabled in February.

Fortnite’s biggest search increase occurred on March 15 after Drake played the game live on Twitch. Not only did it break records for concurrent Twitch views, it caused searches on Pornhub to increase 824% above average.

The most popular Fortnite related searches include “hentai”, “battle royale”, “animation” and “strip”. Following some viral videos on YouTube, “try not to nut fornite” also became a popular search. “SFM” is a term often combined with game searches (see Overwatch Insights).

By looking at what users typically search before or after searching Fortnite, we can start to see a game related trend develop. The most common search during the same user session is “Overwatch“, followed by “Team Fortress 2” and “video game”. Other games being searched “Minecraft“, “Pokemon”, “Rainbox Six Seige” and Fortnite’s rival platform, “PUBG” (PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds).

Out statisticians found that male visitors are 136% more likely to search for Fortnite compared to women. Visitors between the ages of 18 to 24 are 361% more likely to search compared to all other age groups. As Fortnite gameplay has moved into mobile platforms, it’s visitors on Apple iOS based devices that are 77% more likely to search Fortnite compared to Android users.

Across the United States, visitors from Kansas are proportionately the most likely to search for Fortnite, followed by those from South Dakota, Rhode Island, Connecticut and California. Based on its proportion of all searches, Fortnite is least popular in D.C., Mississippi, Hawaii, Vermont and North and South Carolina.

Worldwide, visitors from Finland are proportionately the most likely to be searching for Fortnite, followed by visitors from France, Ireland, Norway and Denmark. In North America, the United States ranks 6th, Canada is 12th and Mexico is 19th worldwide.

March 8th is International Women’s Day, so in this edition of Insights we’re joined by Newsweek for an exclusive look at female traffic on this day as well as a special report on recent changes we made to better cater Pornhub’s content to the needs of women.

On March 8th, we found that female traffic to Pornhub was above average levels in the morning. The +5.2% increase at 7am is similar to the change we saw January 20th on the day of the 2018 Women’s March. Female traffic dipped slightly below after in the afternoon, but grew +4.2% above average at 9pm.

Our statisticians noted several search terms that increased in popularity on March 8th. Searches containing “womens day” were up 1696% among both genders, as well as a 684% increase in searches for “hot sex”. Amy Schumer saw a 513% gain in searches for her name, most likely a result of her speaking out publicly for women on that day. More attention was being paid to female pleasure, with cunnilingus related searches increasing dramatically. And just as we found on the day of the Women’s March, searches for “feminist” porn also increased. Other gaining terms like “cuckold” and “romantic” were also featured in our Valentine’s Day Insights.

“Female Friendly” becomes “Popular With Women”

As the number of women enjoying adult content increases – according to Pornhub’s 2017 Year in Review, “Porn for Women” was a top trending search throughout the year, increasing by over 1,400 percent. On December 8th, Pornhub launched a new “Popular With Women” category which automatically aggregates content catered to the growing demographics’ specific interests, taking into account women’s views and preferences.

“Popular with Women” was launched to replace its predecessor category, “Female Friendly” in order to adhere to customer feedback regarding the need for content that better reflected women’s diverse preferences. The category used to house content that was marketed towards women, rather than content women have actually enjoyed.

As a result of the new category name and aggregated content, “Popular With Women” has significantly increased the rank of the previous “Female Friendly” in the few just the months since it’s launch. We have also found that women spend nearly a minute longer on Pornhub (10 minutes 30 seconds) when they begin browsing the new category, compared to the previous (9 minutes 36 seconds).

As part of the new “Popular With Women” category changes, viewers can check boxes with sub-categories to refine the videos results being displayed. The most popular refinement is for “pussy licking” videos, followed by “rough sex”, “threesome” and “lesbian”.

As we discovered in previous Insights stories focused on female preferences, we know that women enjoy lesbian videos and also enjoy watching gay male content.

Pornhub Insights last wrote about pornstar Stormy Daniels’ searches back in January of 2018 shortly after her alleged affair with Donald Trump was revealed. At the time, searches for Stormy Daniels went from a daily average of 2500 to more than 2 million searches in just 5 days!

The Economist checked in to see how the ongoing news has affected searches, and it seems that the searches, much like the story, just keep on going.

When compared to her 2018 average, searches on January 14 were 514% higher worldwide, and 330% higher in the United States. On January 31, Stormy Daniels appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! which caused a 325% increase in U.S. searches and 258% worldwide.

On February 13th, more details were revealed when Trump’s lawyer admitted to paying Daniels hush money, which caused another 250% jump in searches. And most recently, searches jumped to their highest level when it was reported that Daniels would be suing Donald Trump. On March 7th, Stormy Daniels searches were up 536% in the U.S. and 489% worldwide.

Due to the political nature of the affair, our statisticians next compared Stormy Daniels searches in Washington D.C. to that of the United States. At all points after the initial story came out, Pornhub visitors from D.C. were more likely to see increased searches for Stormy Daniels than visitors elsewhere in the U.S.

By combing search data for Democratic (Blue) and Republican (Red) states, our statisticians found that Red states were more likely to have increased searches for Stormy Daniels compared to their left-leaning counterparts. In fact, Red states are 12% more likely to search for Stormy Daniels videos compared to Blue states.

If we average the searches so far in 2018, we can see which states are proportionately more interested in Stormy Daniels. Eastern states like Vermont, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Virginia, Massachusetts and D.C. are the most interested Stormy searches. The states where Stormy Daniels represents a smaller portion of total searches include Alabama, Nevada, Hawaii, Arkansas, Georgia and Mississippi.

Our data shows that male visitors are 132% more likely to search for Stormy Daniels compared to female visitors. Millennials aged 18-34 are far less likely to search for Stormy Daniels when compared to visitors over the age of 35. Proportionately, the demographic most likely to search for Stormy Daniels is men over the age of 65.

In this edition of Pornhub Insights, we’re joined by our friends at UNO to take a closer look at Argentina’s Millennials, specifically those visitors between the ages of 18 to 34 who make up 59% of Pornhub traffic from Argentina. Millennials last an average 9 minute and 48 seconds when they visit Pornhub, which means they come and go 76 seconds faster than visitors over 35.

Lesbian is the category most viewed by all age groups, but millennials are 254% more likely to view the Hentai category when compared to Argentina’s visitors over the age of 35. They are also far more likely to view Cosplay, Cartoon and Virtual Reality Videos. Compared to millennials elsewhere in the world, Argentinians are more likely to view Old/Young, Anal and Transgender categories.

Millennials are most likely to visit Pornhub between Midnight to 2am, whereas traffic from visitors over 35 tends to drop off after midnight. Millennials are also far less likely to be visiting Pornhub in the morning compared to those over 35.

80% of Argentina’s Millennial visitors are using a smartphone, compared to only 67% of those over 35. That means that Millennials are -38% less likely to be using a Tablet and -42% less likely to be using a Desktop computer or Laptop.

It was revealed in Pornhub’s 2017 Year in Review that ASMR was one of the top trending searches of the year.

According to Wikipedia, Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response (ASMR) “is a term used for an experience characterised by a static-like or tingling sensation on the skin that typically begins on the scalp and moves down the back of the neck and upper spine” and that “it is most commonly triggered by specific acoustic or visual stimuli, and less commonly by intentional attention control.”

Perhaps it’s the “acoustic stimuli” and “intentional attention control” that leads to the natural relation between ASMR and JOI. Although JOI stands for Jerk Off Instructions, it’s not meant to be a tutorial video, but rather a type of vocal coaxing that will turn-on the listener and guide their masturbation towards orgasm.

From January 2016 to January 2018, searches for “ASMR” have gained 694% in popularity among French visitors.

The most popular ASMR related searches in France include “asmr french”, “asmr francais” and “asmr masturbation”. The connection between ASMR and JOI can be seen by the popularity of searches for “asmr joi”.

As you can imagine, visitors from France are interested in hearing their Jerk Off Instructions in French, so it’s no surprise that “french joi” and “joi francais” are among the most popular JOI related searches. Other combined searches include “hentai joi”, “feet joi” and “joi countdown”. Further down the list we find searches for “joi cei”. CEI stands for Cum Eating Instructions, so it’s a natural extension to end the Jerk Off Instructions.

French men are 732% more likely to search for ASMR when compared to French women. When comparing age groups, ASMR is much more popular with French Millennials under the age of 35. In particular, French visitors between the ages of 18 to 24 are 250% more likely to search for ASMR when compared to all other age groups in France. Visitors over the age of 45 are at least -71% less likely to listen in to ASMR videos.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, it’s French men who are 1457% more likely to look for Jerk Off Instructions to accompany their jerking off. Once again, it’s French millennials under the age of 35 who are more likely to try out this form of verbal coaxing. Visitors from France between the ages of 18 to 24 are nearly 400% more likely to search compared to other age groups, while visitors over the age of 65 are -80% less likely to try JOI. Perhaps by that age no more instructions are necessary!

ASMR is proportionately 118% more popular among French visitors than those in the rest of Europe, and 65% more than the rest of the world. Within France, visitors from Pays de la Loire are 22% more likely to search for ASMR, whereas visitors from Corsica are -31% less likely to be interested in ASMR.

Searches for JOI are -32% less popular in France when compared to the rest of Europe and -10% less than elsewhere in the world. Within France, visitors from Brittany are the most likely to search JOI, whereas visitors from Corsica are -30% less likely.

The 90th Annual Academy Awards took place on Sunday March 4th, so our friends at Cinema Blend checked in to see if Pornhub fans were willing to put their pornstar love on hold to watch their favorite Hollywood stars. The live coverage began at around 7pm Eastern Time, as celebrities strolled the red carpet, and Pornhub traffic across the United States dipped by as much as 4% compared to 7pm on a typical Sunday. The award show ceremony began at 8:30pm at which time traffic was only -3% below average.

It would seem that a lot of people were holding out to watch the evening’s biggest awards being handed out, with traffic dropping by -7% between 10pm and 11pm. That’s a considerable change in traffic since 11pm on Sunday evenings is Pornhub’s highest traffic time of the week.

While the United States had an average drop of -5% from 8pm to midnight, the actually change by state varied greatly. The states most interested in watching the Academy Awards were New York and North Carolina with a -10% drop in traffic, followed closely by -9% drops in Pennsylvania and Massachusetts. Pornhub fans in Iowa and New Hampshire favored rewarding themselves instead of watching celebrities reward each other — traffic in those states was 7% above average from 8pm to midnight. Only 8 states had traffic above average on Sunday evening.

Our statisticians discovered that women were far more likely to tune out of Pornhub to tune into the awards. Female traffic was down -6% at 7pm as the Red Carpet coverage kicked off, and plummeted -11% below average at 11pm.

Compared to the weekly average, March 4th saw searches containing “oscars” increase by 1229% and “award” by 388%. Many of this year’s top Oscar nominated movies and celebrities saw search increases on March 4th. Even searches containing “celebrity”, one of Pornhub’s most popular search terms, increased by as much as 38%.

In today’s Insights report, we’re once again taking a look at the preferences of Pornhub’s female visitors around the world. This time we’re joined by heute.at for an in-depth look at Austria’s women and how they compare to Austria’s men, and women elsewhere in the world.

Just over 25% of Austria’s visitors are women. That’s slightly less than the worldwide average of 26%, but it has grown 1% in Austria since 2015. Millennial’s between the ages of 18 to 35 make up 62% of Austria’s female visitors, with the 18 to 24 age group being 3% smaller than the worldwide average. Since 2015, the proportion of female visitors aged 25 to 34 has grown by 6%.

Austrian women spend on average 11 minutes and 5 seconds on Pornhub, which is 17 seconds longer than Austrian men. Although that time is 20 seconds less than the female average worldwide, it’s grown 54 seconds since 2015.

The most popular search by Austrian women is “beim ficken erwischt”, which loosely translated means a couple who were caught in the act. Searches involving “deutsche” and “german” videos are near the top of Austrian women’s favorites.

As in other parts of the world, Austrian women are interested in videos from the Lesbian category more than any other. The next most popular categories are Babe, Mature and Gangbang.

When compared to Austrian men, women are proportionately 114% more likely to view the Rough Sex category, and 104% more into Gangbang videos.

When compared to women elsewhere in the world, Austria’s women are 661% more likely to view the German category, 301% more into Babe and 114% more into Fisting.

Since 2015, the Old/Young category has gained 112% in popularity among Austria’s women. The Japanese category has grown by 111% and Transgender by 97%. Over the same period, the Teen (18+) category has decreased -65% in popularity, along with a -60% decrease in Reality and -52% in Ebony.

The 2018 Winter Olympics opened February 9th in Pyeongchang, South Korea. As people all over the world tuned in to watch their favorite winter sports, the excitement soon flowed over to Pornhub where searches containing “Olympic” and “Olympics” grew by up to 561% compared to average levels.

Not only were Olympic athletes on people’s minds, but also increased interest in the hosting nation of South Korea. Searches containing either “Korea” or “Korean” grew by 38% above normal levels on February 9th and have continued to remain high.

Some interesting Olympic related searches that had big gains included “Nude Olympics” by +1801%, and a noticeable “Bulge” increase of +239%. “Figure Skating” was the Winter Olympic sport with the biggest search gain (+622%) followed by “Skiing” (+424%) and “Hockey” (+245%).

Korea/Korean (+112%) topped the list of gaining nationality searches, thanks to being the hosting nationality and also due to the news coverage of the North and South Korean teams coming together for the games. Worldwide searches for Russia/Russian grew by 78% and China/Chinese by 67%.

While porn websites are officially banned in Korea, we do still have regular visitors from the Gangwon-do region. The influx of Olympic athletes, press and spectators caused Pornhub’s traffic to rise as early as February 1st.  On February 7th traffic was 70% above normal levels. The increase was slightly lower on February 9th, perhaps as all hands were on deck for the opening ceremony preparations. The peak traffic increase of 85% happened on February 12th.

Our statisticians next looked at the demographic makeup of visitors from the Gangwon-do region. Using our analytics tool, we compared visitors from February 7-14 to the the typical visitors from the same region, and found that the proportion of female visitors grew by 25%. Visitors between the ages of 18-24 shrunk by -6% but the group aged 35 to 54 grew by more than 25%. The largest increase of +80% came from visitors over the age of 65.

To see what type of porn the Olympic athletes and spectators were most interested in watching, our statisticians compared the popularity of categories in Gangwon-do from February 7-14 to that of typical visitors from the region. We found that the “Threesome” category increased the most by 35% in popularity, perhaps indicating that some athletes were interested in teaming up with new partners during their time in Pyeongchang.  The popularity of the “Lesbian” category increase by 34% “Anal” by 24%.
