Super Mario 35th Anniversary Insights

It’s been 35 years since Nintendo released the original Super Mario Bros. game, which revitalized the home gaming industry and revolutionized the way we play games. Mario and his friends (and foes) have remained a part of our collective culture ever since, with a continuous flow of new games for each generation of console and video game players.

If you follow the Pornhub Insights blog, you already know that video games are some of our most popular searches, with thousands of porn parodies and fan created content available to stream. In Pornhub’s 2019 Year in Review, we found that “Super Mario” ranked as the 4th most popular game character search, increasing 96% since 2018. Nintendo’s “Zelda” took the number one spot.

More Popular than Ever

On September 3rd, Nintendo announced several upcoming releases in celebration of Mario’s 35th anniversary, including rereleases of popular Mario games and revolutionary new augmented reality racing gear. When Cinema Blend asked the Insights team what effect that had on Pornhub Searches, our statisticians found that searches for Super Mario and related terms surged 142% in the days following the announcement.

On September 13th, the actual anniversary of Mario’s 1985 release, related searches again increased by 57% above average. It’s not uncommon for our statisticians to record an increase in searches following news of a new video game release or update, as seen in our Trending Game Searches Insights.

Super Searches

Pornhub’s statisticians sorted through months of search data to see what Super Mario related searches were most popular. The results showed that “Mario” just edged out “Princess Peach” and that “Bowsette” still remains popular nearly two years after going viral as a hypothetical fan-art creation.

In our Bowser & Bowsette Insights we revealed that there were more than 3 million searches for Bowsette in the first week, leading her to become one of The Searches that Defined 2018.

Super Mario’s All-Stars

When our statisticians combined all searches, they were able to find which Super Mario originating characters were most popular. Mario still tops Princess Peach, and we find many other characters like Rosalina, Princess Daily, Yoshi and Toadette are regularly searched as well.

The two characters most commonly searched together are Mario & Princess Peach, followed by Princess Peach & Princess Daily, and Princess Peach & Browser. (It seems like Pornhub visitors don’t mind if Bowser occasionally gets the girl).

Note: When searches contained names or terms that may not be directly related to Super Mario, such as common names like “Mario” and “Luigi”, our statisticians removed those unrelated terms from the search results.

Searches Spanning Generations

Our statisticians found that men are proportionately 571% more likely to search for Super Mario related terms when compared to women. That’s much larger than the gender gap we have found for other video games like Fortnite.

When compared to all other age groups, we found that visitors between the ages of 25 to 34 are 56% more likely to search for Super Mario related terms. This generation of Millennials grew up from Mario’s earliest days to his latest incarnations, so it’s no surprise they would be the most likely to search for these memorable characters.

The anonymized data from Google Analytics allows our statisticians to see what other terms our visitors are likely to search during the same visit session that they searched for Super Mario. The results reveal that these visitors are also interested in “cartoon” porn, “parody”, “hentai”, “anime” and other games like “Fortnite”, “Sonic” and “Pokemon”.

We also like that “rule 34” made the list. According to the Urban Dictionary, “The 34th rule of the Internet states that any object, character, or media franchise imaginable has porn associated with it.” Or to put it more bluntly, “If it exists, there’s porn for it.”

Super Mario World

Geo data shows us that Super Mario related searches are most popular in South America, where visitors are 79% more likely to search when compared to the rest of the world. The Northern part of the continent including Canada, the United States and Mexico are also more likely to search when compared to the world average. Visitors from the African continent are the least likely to search by -80%.
