The release of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has taken the gaming world by storm. Since it was one of the most anticipated releases of the year, we knew it would impact searches in one way or another. So, naturally, we dove into the data!
Hourly changes in traffic
The game was released at midnight, a normally busy hour on Pornhub. However, some people stood in long lines eagerly waiting for their copy long before then. When the doors opened at midnight, traffic on Pornhub was already starting to fall below average. Not by much, but midnight itself saw a drop of -2.3%. The really big changes were yet to come!
Popularity of Zelda searches
By May 6th, it seems people’s curiosity was beginning to pique, as the term “zelda” saw its first substantial increase with +236%. The following day, the number increased even more, with +357%. However, May 8th to 11th saw that number drop. On May 12th, Tears of the Kingdom release day, it changed again, with a jump to +399%. That trend continued, with May 13th seeing an increase of +759%, followed by +1,362% on May 14th and a massive +1,477% increase on the 15th!
Compared to their average popularity in Q1, that is a huge change in search traffic over the weekend!
Top gaining Zelda searches
Our staticians wanted to know how the Zelda universe impacted search terms between May 12th and 14th when compared to average. It seemed the character Purah was at the top of the list, as the term, “purah zelda” saw an enormous increase of +42,257%! Second to Purah was “legend of zelda rule 34” which saw an increase of +22,067%. Coming in third, “zelda botw paya” saw an increase of +7,938%.
A search term involving cosplay, “zelda cosplay” saw a jump in interest to +5,399%, while terms involving hentai, “legend of zelda hentai” saw an increase of +729% and “zelda hentai” was up +531%.
For those of you unfamiliar with the term, “rule 34,” it’s one of the core internet rules stating any object, character, or media available also has porn associated with it. In other words, if it exists, there’s a porn version of it. And Zelda is a prime example of that!
Top Zelda related searches
Looking at all the searches so far in May, our staticians found after “legend of zelda” the most popular searches were “zelda hentai” followed by “zelda cosplay.” Purah showed up again in the fourth most popular search term, “purah zelda.”
After that, many searches became more character-specific, including “princess zelda,” “link and zelda,” “zelda ganondorf” and “zelda great fairy.”
