Valentine’s Insights 2023

In this edition of Pornhub Insights, we took a closer look at your activity on the site for the week leading up to, and on, Valentine’s Day. With special attention to specific terms revolving around the International Day of Love, we pulled data that yielded some interesting results.

We compiled a unique terms list and pulled the data to see their proportional popularity on Valentine’s Day. The topmost romantic search term was, to nobody’s surprise, “valentines,” while the 2nd most popular term was “wife,” and the 3rd was “lingerie.”

There are a couple interesting things to note here. First, you will find the term “wife” gets more attention than “girlfriend.” This can be seen with more clarity especially in terms we will look at later. Additionally, the terms, “romantic,” “love,” “kiss,” and “valentine” proved more popular than searches related to treats, such as “candy,” “chocolate,” and “roses.”

When we looked at searches containing unique terms our team compiled in the week leading up to Valentine’s Day, we found some predictable results, and some that were telling about fantasies this time of the year.

First, we looked at the percentage difference in popularity from February 7th to the 14th, compared to average results. Unsurprisingly, low volume terms like “valentines day surprise,” “valentines day,” and “valentines day sex” saw massive increases. “Valentines day surprise” lead the way with a jump of +4414%, while “valentines day” jumped +3452% and “valentines day sex” jumped +2575% respectively.

However, we also saw the term “romantic” jump +9%. While this number might not seem substantial, it is a term that is common throughout the rest of the year, rather than focused solely on a day, such as “valentine,” so it is a significant increase in terms of raw searches. Romance, it appears, is very much alive.

Additionally, other non-Valentine’s specific terms such as “roses” was up +706%, “sweetheart” was up +244%, “passionate intimate sex” was up +123%, “wife surprises husband” was up +34%, “romantic threesome” was up +13% and “love” was up +11%.

Terms related to lingerie also increased in this period leading up to Valentine’s Day. “Lingerie anal” was up +57%, “sexy lingerie” was up +13%, and “lingerie try on” was up +11%.

Remember how searches related to wives went up more during this time as well? Wives seem to be of extra interest in the week leading up to Valentine’s Day. The term “wife surprises husband” was up +34%, “share wife” was up +28%, “wife shared” was up +25% and “wife switch” was up +24%. In contrast to these searches, the term “husband” was only up +9%.

Valentine’s Day Traffic Changes

With those of you who are in relationships during Valentine’s Day, you will probably find yourselves busier than normal. This means you won’t have that extra time to slip away and visit your favorite website. For that reason, traffic during Valentine’s Day is, unsurprisingly, below average.

Throughout the day, there was a peak afternoon decrease of -6.9% around 1pm. Later in the afternoon, traffic starts to rise a bit until 5pm, where there was only a decrease of -3.1%. But after dinner, we can see the numbers drop to their lowest, at -7.5% around midnight, and staying well below average until about 3am.

Perhaps what is most interesting about the traffic changes is how widely it varies between male and female visitors. The data shows us that women are responsible for more of the traffic drop than men. This is especially true in the afternoon, when we saw a -10% drop below average around 2pm. On the male side of traffic, it was much steadier, with an average of -4.5% throughout the day. However, when 10pm hits, the male traffic starts to drop alongside the female traffic, with both being nearly equal from about 11pm to 1am.

Finally, we looked at the behavior of the United State broken down by individual states. Pulling the data from each state between 8pm and midnight showed us a vast range of differences from coast to coast. We were interested to see which states were the most romantic, based on their drop of traffic to Pornhub. Presumably, they are spending more time with their special someone than paying attention to the site.

We found Connecticut to have the biggest drop, nearly a quarter more than normal at -23.2%. This was followed by Rhode Island, with a drop of -19.1%, and then Illinois with -16.5%. On the other side of that coin is the states with the least drop in traffic. Unfortunately, Ohio takes home the medal for the least romantic state, with a decrease in traffic of a meager -2.4%, followed by both Iowa and Nebraska at -4.1% respectively.

We hope you enjoyed this edition of Pornhub Insights. And we are sorry to everyone in Ohio. Better luck next year!
