Apple September 7th Event Insights

Apple’s annual event is streamed live to millions of people around the world who tune in to see the latest gadgets and iPhone models. This year, the event was held September 7th at 1pm Eastern Time. Pornhub’s statisticians worked with the team at Mashable to capture all the excitement through data.

To see how Pornhub’s traffic fluctuated during the event, our statisticians compared the number of pageviews per minute, to the number of pageviews on a typical Wednesday (averaged over the previous 4 weeks).

Our premise was that during the event, as each major product was revealed, there would be a drop in pageviews on Pornhub. And during the less interesting parts, we would see people start to browse Pornhub again.

To make things more interesting, our statisticians separated the pageview changes by Apple devices (iPhones, iPads, MacOS) and non-Apple devices (Android, Windows). The theory being that Apple device users would have more interest in the event than those using, for example, Android based smartphones.

Below you can see the percent change in pageviews for each minute before, during and after, with key moments of the event indicated along the timeline.

The data showed that prior to the event, traffic from both Apple and non-Apple devices were close to that of an average Wednesday. About 15 minutes before the event, Apple views started to decrease, hitting -4.2% as the event began streaming at 1pm ET. Non-Apple traffic was only down -1.9%.

About 10 minutes into the event, the new Apple Watch Series 8 resulted in a noticeable drop in pageviews, as well as during the crash detection presentation.

The new “Watch Ultra” gained the most interest from viewers, resulting in -7.4% decrease in Pornhub’s pageviews from Apple users. That peak occurred around the time that the workout, endurance and diving features were being presented. Non-Apple devices experienced their peak drop of -3.4% at 1:30pm, during the same part of the presentation.

Around 1:40pm, as the new Air Pods were being presented, pageviews from non-Apple devices began to increase, returning to normal levels by 1:48pm when the new iPhone 14 was revealed. At the same time, Apple devices were down -5.6% during the iPhone 14 reveal, and dropped further as the new satellite service was being presented.

By the time the iPhone 14 Pro model was revealed at 1:48pm, non-Apple pageviews began to increase above typical levels on a Wednesday, while Apple devices stayed below average until the end of the event at 2:35pm.

Immediately after the event, Apple device pageviews began to increase well above average, as high as +5.1% about 20 minutes after it ended. It appears that Apple users were excited by what they saw, and they headed to Pornhub for some release!

About our data:

What’s considered “non-Apple”?

Mobile devices make up 97% of Pornhub’s traffic (see 2021 Year in Review), so the MacOS and Windows portion of these results is really small. So long story short, this post is really comparing “iPhones vs Android”.

As the saying goes, we’re comparing our Apples to Apples, so the results are proportional to the device type, but they’re both pretty close. Android makes up about 54% of Pornhub’s traffic and Apple iOS is 45% (see 2021 Year in Review).
