Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response, or more commonly referred to as ASMR is defined by Wikipedia as a “perceptual phenomenon characterized as a distinct, pleasurable tingling sensation in the head, scalp, back, or peripheral regions of the body in response to visual, auditory, tactile, olfactory, or cognitive stimuli.” In other words, exposure to certain stimuli like the sound of whispering or watching someone brush their hair triggers a blissful almost trance-like feeling.
Many of these triggers are visual or auditory in nature and as such, Pornhub has video content specifically intended to bring on this “brain orgasm” in viewers. Since 2015, ASMR searches have continued to increased on Pornhub, perhaps in part due to the considerable amount of media attention the phenomenon has received within the same time period.
Compared to the previous years, ASMR searches grew by more than +200% in both 2016 and 2017. In 2018 searches grew +174%, followed by +92% in 2019 and +76% in 2020.
Supply follows demand, so it’s no surprise that uploads of ASMR related videos saw similar growth since 2015, with the biggest upload increases happening from late-2018 until present.
The most popular search containing ASMR is “asmr joi”, which stands for “jerk off instructions”, itself a popular genre on Pornhub. Other searches include “asmr roleplay”, “erotic asmr”, “asmr moaning” and “dirty talk asmr”.
To see what genres ASMR fans might enjoy, our statisticians looked at what other searches were most popular during the same visit sessions.
“Joi” tops the list of searches performed before or after ASMR, followed by “hentai”, “Japanese”, “lesbian” and “pov”. We also see searches related to sound like “dirty talk”, “moaning” and “erotic audio”.
Proportionately, men are +27% more likely to search for ASMR related videos when compared to women. Pornhub visitors aged 18 to 24 are +113% more likely to search ASMR when compared to other age groups, with visitors over the age of 35 being much less likely to search for ASMR.
Within the United States, visitors from Vermont are +32% more likely to search ASMR when compared to the national average. Oregon visitors are +27% more likely, as well as +25% in Alaska and +23% in Washington state.
The District of Columbia is -30% less likely to search for ASMR, as well as -24% in Wyoming, -22% in Mississippi and -15% in Connecticut.
Worldwide, visitors from Finland are proportionately the most likely to search for ASMR by +247%. Hong Kong is +201% more likely to search, followed by +99% in Uruguay, +97% in Sweden, +92% in Norway and +84% in Iceland.
